I suppose one of my motives also in writing that [Aisling nó Iníon A] in Irish was that I think there’s a stereotype of what an Irish speaker and Irish writer – especially an Irish speaker – is like and what the Gaeilgeoir community is like, which is conservative, Catholic. I thought ‘yes, but I’m not like that, lots of Irish speakers aren’t like that.’ I want to write something that shows we can also be radical and contemporary and on the side of change.

Scéal Aisling atá san úrscéal comhaimseartha seo. Déagóir í a tógadh i dteaghlach an-choimeádach traidisiúnta i mBaile Átha Cliath. Ceistíonn sí prionsabail a máthar, prionsabail dhiongbháilte na heite deise. Agus an choimhlint eatarthu ag géarú, tarlaíonn tubaiste a athraíonn a saol go hiomlán agus a spreagann ceisteanna faoi gach rud a chreid siad cheana. Úrscéal dár ré féin ina ndéantar mórcheisteanna conspóideacha a phlé, ginmhilleadh ina measc.

This novel, set in Dublin in the present day, is about a teenager from a very traditional background, Aisling, who has begun to challenge her mother’s right-wing ideals. As the conflict between them escalates, a horrific event turns their lives upside down and they both begin to question everything they used to believe in. Some controversial issues are at the forefront of this story, including abortion.
