How do you make a teapot be intellectually interesting? That’s poetry’s challenge. The teapot has to be more than a teapot, but must not be allowed to surrender its teapot-ness. So you try to take what’s given to you, which is the bits and pieces of the material world and you’re trying to investigate them through imagination, through emotion to an extent, through the intellect, through the eyes, through the ears and you’re trying to see how you can make, how you can synthesize the product of all of those investigations, and come up with something that is a piece of language, a piece of art.
