I think probably fewer and fewer people speak it [Irish] from the cradle. I think it is too important a part of what makes us different from other English-speaking people for it to be entirely lost. I would be heartbroken if it were to die but I don’t think I would be heartbroken if it survived as a literary language. As long as I’m alive, Irish is alive.

Is úrscéal staire é Scéal Ghearóid Iarla atá bunaithe ar phearsa aitheanta, Gearóid Mac Gearailt, 3ú hIarla Dheasumhan (1335-1398), a dtugtaí ‘Gearóid Iarla’ air. Is file agus scoláire í Máire Mhac an tSaoi, ar foilsíodh cuid mhór filíochta agus scéalta Gaeilge léi, mar aon le haltanna acadúla ar scríbhneoireacht na Gaeilge. Foilsíodh a cuimhní cinn, The Same Age as the State, sa bhliain 2003.

[This is a historical novel about the third Earl of Desmond, Gerald FitzMaurice FitzGerald (1335–1398), also known as ‘Gearóid Iarla’ (Earl Gerald). Máire Mhac an tSaoi is a poet and scholar. She has published numerous Irish-language poems and stories, and academic articles on Irish-language writing; her memoir, The Same Age as the State, was published in 2003.]
